Fr. John J. Carroll (Father Jack) was born on January 16, 1924, entered the Society of Jesus on July 30, 1943, and was ordained on June 18, 1955. Throughout his many years of fruitful ministry, he has served in many capacities, among which are as a professor in the Philippines and in Rome, a writer, an administrator and researcher at the Institute for Church and Social Issues (ICSI).

His last assignment was as Senior Research Associate at John J Carroll Institute for Church and Social Issues (JJCICSI).

He has been a resident at the Lucas Province Infirmary for the past several years. In early July 2014, he was brought to the Philippine Heart Center for treatment of pneumonia. He had periods of disorientation and underwent throracentesis to remove the buildup of fluid between his lungs and chest wall. Thus he was able to breathe more comfortably and his vital signs became stable.

On July 14, Fr. Jack was discharged from the Heart Center though not fully recovered from pneumonia and his condition remained tenuous. He was brought back to the Lucas Infirmary where he was provided the support he needed.

On July 17, a Thursday, he expired at 3.15 pm.

Wake masses will be offered at the Oratory in Loyola House of Studies at 8:00PM every night, from Friday to Sunday, July 18-20, 2014. Fr. Emmanuel Alfonso will preside on Friday, Fr. Provincial Antonio Moreno on Saturday, and Fr. Roberto Yap on Sunday.

Funeral mass will be on Monday, July 21 at the Oratory in Loyola House of Studies. Fr. Socius William Abbott will preside, and Fr. Robert Rivera will give the homily.

As we pray for the eternal repose of Fr. Jack, at the same time we give thanks to God for the fruitful ministry of the gift that has been Fr. John J. Carroll.
